AIACC Data, Methods and Synthesis

This site provides access to reports of projects and case studies conducted as part of the international Assessments of Impacts and Adaptations to Climate Change in Multiple Regions and Sectors (AIACC) initiative. A searchable database of projects by country, region, and sector contains some of the final reports in pdf format.

The projects cover adaptation in almost all sectors, with five projects with final reports in southern Africa, one project in eastern Africa and three projects in western Africa. The site also provides accessible summaries of each project, as well as updates posted throughout the duration of the studies.

Biomass 4 Africa

This web portal is the starting point for Africa-related biomass information. It contains the latest news on biofuels research on the continent, as well as an events calendar and discussion forum.

CABI

CABI is a not-for-profit, intergovernmental organisation specialising in agricultural and environmental research, publishing and communication. With over 40 different member countries, its scientific projects include finding ways to lower production costs while using ecological practices. CABI studies environmental impacts of invasive species and pests, and searches for natural ways of controlling them. CABI also finds solutions to agricultural problems caused by climate change, provides microbial services and advises on trade policy.

Checkbiotech (Green Portal)

Checkbiotech's Green Portal focuses on using biotechnology for a sustainable future. It contains news and features on biofuels research and development in both developed and developing countries.

Articles focus on: how improving production methods with enzymes can increase biofuel yields; key research breakthroughs; how enhancing plant genetics can improve biofuel yields and make agriculture more sustainable; world politics surrounding biofuels; who the key industry players in the biofuels market are; and how biofuels are changing global economics.

Climate Change Adaptation – Sub Saharan Africa

This online resource captures current articles, reports, papers and books sourced from nongovernmental organisations and development agencies such as ActionAid, SouthSouthNorth, the International Institute for Environment and Development and the World Bank. The site features short summaries and links to full papers, all of which are relevant to adaptation in sub-Saharan Africa.

Climate Change Knowledge Network

CCKN brings together expertise, experience and perspectives from more than a dozen organisations from developing, transitional and developed countries. Limited resources, knowledge and capacity in developing countries, and lack of dialogue and understanding between industrialised and developing countries, obstruct progress toward international efforts to address climate change. CCKN aims to help address these gaps by facilitating focused research and capacity building in developing and developed countries, with sustainable development as the overall goal. Its 'Climate Compendium' has a comprehensive section on international negotiations.

ClimateArk

ClimateArk is an information portal on climate change dedicated to promoting public policy that addresses global climate change. The site contains news and a searchable directory of sites concerned with climate change. ClimateArk is run by a US-based private company whose main internet presence is the Ecoportal

EarthWire/Africa

EarthWire/Africa provides a free daily overview of environmental news from 14 countries in southern Africa. The site reviews more than 40 newspapers for environment-related news stories. Press releases and news from research organisations, the public sector, and environmental organisations are also included.

Environment and energy: Capacity development for policymakers

This website provides briefing documents for decision makers on current proposals under negotiation in the Bali Action Plan. A summary of key issues in the climate negotiations is available along with background information and commentary on the plan's building blocks — mitigation, adaptation, technology and finance — as well as land use, land-use change and forestry. The website supports a UN Development Programme project, involving 10 countries to assess developing countries' funding requirements for mitigating and adapting to climate change.

Environmental News Network

Since 1995, ENN been involved as a multi-faceted web production on environmental issues, including climate change and biodiversity. ENN operates mainly as a freely available information source rather than advocacy website, primarily focusing on environmental news but also including live chats, interactive quizzes, daily feature stories, forums for debate, audio and video.

FAO Climate Change

This web portal publishes news and information on the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) activities in climate change. It links to key FAO publications on agriculture, livestock, forestry and fisheries as well as cross-sector topics such as bioenergy, biodiversity and climate risk management. The gateway gives information on FAO's work in these areas and provides links to relevant factsheets, events and multimedia including videos and audio lectures.

Greenhouse Gas Online

Greenhouse Gas Online aims to provide an up-to-date resource that distills freely available information on cutting edge greenhouse gas science and news. The site features links to numerous news articles and scientific abstracts (from over 100 peer reviewed journals).

India Country Analysis - Energy Information Administration (US Federal Agency)

This US federal agency site gives a comprehensive overview of energy development and supply in India. The information is categorised by fuel source (oil, natural gas or coal), and electricity generation. The full report is also available as pdf  [108 KB] or html.

International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD)

The IISD is a Canadian policy research institute that publishes books, papers and policy briefs on issues affecting sustainable development such as climate change, governance and natural resources. The IISD Reporting Services focuses on environmental issues and publishes news and event coverage as well as the Earth Negotiations Bulletin (see ENB). The organisation also runs the Climate-L.Org blog and hosts a number of networks, including the Trade Knowledge Network and the Sustainable Coffee Partnership.

Knowledge for Development

Knowledge for Development is a web-based source of information on science and technology for agriculture and rural development in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. It promotes collaboration between agricultural research and development scientists and technologists in ACP countries, and facilitates dialogue between ACP and European communities with the aim of strengthening policy formulation on science and technology issues.

This website contains a number of useful documents on biofuels and biotechnology in ACP countries.

Latin America Thematic Network on Bioenergy

LAMNET is a worldwide network of 48 institutions from 24 countries, funded by the European Commission. Its main objective is "to establish a trans-national forum for the promotion of sustainable use of biomass in Latin America and other emerging countries". It offers literature on bioenergy, including publications from journals, newspapers and conference proceedings.

Planet Ark

Planet Ark is a non-profit online environmental news service hosted by Reuters, with articles searchable according to a comprehensive list of topics. Users can register to receive daily email alerts, and the site also gives access to Reuters environmental news pictures (copyrighted).

The Energy and Resources Institute

This site offers a thorough introduction to climate change in an Indian context. Several links provide information on, for example, India’s greenhouse gas emissions and the country’s vulnerability to the effects of climate change.

Tiempo Climate Cyberlibrary

This is an electronic information service covering global warming, climate change, sea-level rise and related issues. The Cyberlibrary provides access to authoritative news, views, briefing material, publications, data, analysis tools and educational resources on the subject of climate change, with particular reference to the situation of the developing world.

Trends Online - A Compendium of Data on Global Change

This website provides an online compendium of frequently used time series of global-change data. It includes historical and modern records of atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane, isotopic measurements for atmospheric greenhouse gases, and estimates of global, regional, and national carbon dioxide emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels. Of particular interest is data relating to carbon flux from land-cover change, long-term temperature records, and the total cloud amount over China.
