The Siemens Profile Awards was launched in 2004. This is a pan African initiative with the objective to develop, nurture and advance quality in science and technology reporting. The awards, which recognise excellence in science and technology reporting, were instituted to make science and technology issues more accessible to the 'man in the street'.
Siemens recognised that journalists across all media platforms that report in this field play a key role in demystifying science and technology and making technology's impacts on our lives more easily understood.
The Siemens Profile Awards recognise the role journalists are playing in the science and technology rollout across the continent and encourage them to anchor their reporting in sound research, quality reporting and individual journalistic flair.
For this year's awards we have included a new category — the Student category. One of the crucial steps in the process of 'consciousness-raising' with regard to science and technology is the creation of effective and sustained journalism at university level.
There are 6 categories:
- Industry;
- Energy;
- Healthcare;
- Information and Technology;
- Technology-related Corporate Responsibility; and
- Student category
The student category is aimed at journalism student from all schools of journalism in the continent. These students are required to submit any science and technology stories written by them.
This year the category winners will each win 15, 000 South Africa rand, around US$17,000, and the overall winner will win R15 000 and an international trip to one of the Siemens sites.
